“Do you want to get well?” Jesus asked the man in John 5:6 NIV. At first glance, we may think what a silly question! Of course, I want to get well!
But, after going around and around with the Lord on this one for the past year, I totally understand what Jesus meant. Healing is a process that sometimes we are not mentally ready for. Being made well will change a lot about us. It will change our perspective. It will change our attitude. It will change our focus.
If we are mature enough in Christ, those are good things. If not, it can cause us to be puffed up with pride and toss Jesus to the curb, so to speak. It may sound harsh but think about it, if we are made well, we tend to think we don’t “need” Him anymore. We can walk on our own two feet. We can walk with our head high. No need for crutches, right?
Jesus Christ is NOT a crutch. He holds all things together (Col. 1:7), including you and me. We can do all things through Christ (Phil 4:13), which means we can do nothing without Him.
Do you want to be made well? Ask Jesus to soul-search you and pray to see if you are ready to give Him the honor and glory and not yourself.
